Here, Yoshiki engages Maki and Asako in a conversation about the classic swamp man thought experiment. In this scenario, a person dies in the swamp, only for an identical being to appear and unknowingly continue their life. Yoshiki reflects on how this parallels Hikaru’s fate: the real Hikaru died, and the creature that now looks like him stepped into his place.
Wrestling with this unsettling idea, Yoshiki asks his friends whether they believe the duplicate and the original are truly the same person, or if they are fundamentally different. While Maki and Asako both give thoughtful perspectives, their answers do little to ease Yoshiki’s inner turmoil.
The story then shifts to lighter moments as Hikaru and the group decide to gather at his house. There, Yoshiki quietly sifts through Hikaru’s belongings, triggering a flood of old memories. Among the items, he stumbles across a piece of paper filled with cryptic scribbles, hinting at a deeper mystery. Despite the heavy undertones, the evening takes a warm turn as everyone enjoys fireworks together, briefly escaping the shadows hanging over them.
However, the calm doesn’t last. The episode drops a chilling revelation when Asako’s spiritual sensitivity, something that has always set her apart, suddenly puts her life in jeopardy. Her heightened awareness of the supernatural, an ability inherited from her family, has often guided her through danger. But this very gift now threatens to draw her into something far more perilous.
The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 7 Review
This episode begins, and right off the bat, we can see how dejected Yoshiki is after what Hikaru tried to do in the last episode. He realises the dangers of having someone like Hikaru around, but he also knows he cannot do anything now. Hikaru asks if Yoshiki is mad at him for doing what he did, and tries his best not to say anything like a child. Later, they would decide to skip school. Throughout the journey, Hikaru is tense as to whether Yoshiki is angry at him or not, but Yoshiki mysteriously claims that he is not mad.
Later, we get to see that Yoshiki and Hikaru go to the movies, where they watch a film that Hikaru really wanted to see. On the other hand, at the school, Hikaru’s class prepares for a special performance at their function, which goes pretty well. However, while the performance was happening, we got to see multiple scenes all at the same time. This sequence was done brilliantly, and it has a mysteriously beautiful quality to it.
However, we finally understand why Yoshiki was acting weirdly and even left a cryptic message for his family. We get a shocking turn of events, where Yoshiki calls Hikaru to his room and does something absolutely unthinkable to him. I really did not see this coming, and I am beyond shocked at what just happened. I can finally see just how mentally disturbed Yoshiki has become, and he really is on his last thread of sanity.
Verdict
Today’s episode was really heartbreaking and also traumatising. I do not know how things will go from here on, as they become more vulnerable than ever before in front of each other. At least, towards the end, Hikaru does understand humans a bit more than before.
