The episode opens with Kaoru, Yoshiki’s sister, coming face-to-face with a ghost. It becomes clear that she, too, can see these supernatural beings, something that may be linked to Yoshiki’s ongoing connection with Hikaru. Soon after, Hikaru once again urges Yoshiki to touch him, but this time, he initiates contact as well. The sensation leaves Yoshiki deeply unsettled, as if Hikaru were trying to envelop him entirely. He recalls Rie’s warning that once a spirit attaches itself, it remains bound for life, drawing in other, potentially dangerous entities.

When Yoshiki tells Hikaru about Kaoru’s encounter, Hikaru vows to visit his home and take care of the spirit himself. His method, however, is anything but ordinary; he pulls Yoshiki into a bathtub, leading to one of the creepiest moments of the series so far. Yoshiki finds himself trapped in what looks and feels like slimy brain matter, a disturbing and claustrophobic sight.

During this eerie sequence, Yoshiki experiences a flashback to a childhood quarrel with Hikaru. The fight had broken out over a dead bird they had been caring for, with neither willing to take responsibility and each blaming the other. In the end, it’s revealed that the ghost was manipulating Yoshiki, feeding him these visions to gain control over him.

This episode starts with a very complex philosophy as Yoshiki starts a conversation with Maki and Asako. Here, they discuss the swamp man thought experiment, where a person dies and another being transforms into a similar form, and without realizing that the original body has died, goes home. This is exactly how the real Hikaru died, and the monster Hikaru took his place. Keeping this in mind, Yoshiki asks what his other two friends think about whether the person in the swamp and his doppelganger are different from one another or are exactly the same. Both Maki and Asako had very interesting answers to this, which didn’t really clear Yoshiki’s conflicted feelings.

Next time, we see Hikaru and his friends planning a gathering at his home. Here, Yoshiki goes through the belongings of Hikaru, where he starts to remember old memories. He also gets his hands on an old paper where some very cryptic messages were written. Later, everyone has a very good time lighting fireworks.

Just when you think everything is going great, one of the biggest shockers of this anime drops. Asako, who has always been spiritually very aware, gets her life in danger because of her senses. She was always able to listen to otherworldly things, an ability that runs in her family. Because of her abilities, she was also able to save Yuki when they were young, and that is why she relies on her instincts very much.

To say that I’m shocked is an understatement because I really did not think things would go this way. This is also the very first time that Yoshiki realises how bad the situation is. The creature in front of him is not his friend Hikaru anymore, and I think he finally realizes that.

I doubt they will be able to sustain their relationship for long, as the very first cracks are already here.
