Netflix has taken the lid off of its first major Roald Dahl animated movie, The Twits, that’s been in the works for several years now. We’ve got a release date, Friday, October 17th, in addition to a bunch of new details of the new movie in the runup to release, including many new names.
David Byrne, co-founder and frontman of the new wave band Talking Heads, has written and produced three original songs for the film, performed by the cast, including We’re Not Like Ev’ryone Else, Lullaby, and The Problem Is You. The project also features an end-credit collaboration between Byrne and Paramore’s Hayley Williams titled Open the Door. Byrne described the experience as a fun challenge, noting that, like many Roald Dahl stories, this one features dreadful characters whose antics allow audiences to indulge their worst impulses in a playful way. He was drawn to the opportunity to craft songs that reflected each character’s emotions, and he enlisted Williams to create a track that would leave viewers with a sense of heart and connection after the chaos caused by Mr. and Mrs. Twit. Williams, whose favorite Dahl book growing up was The Twits, said joining the film felt like “one pinch-me moment after another.” She praised Phil and Daisy’s adaptation for its blend of cautionary tale and heartfelt depiction of chosen family, adding that collaborating with Byrne from scratch on the song was both surreal and incredibly fun.
In a statement released today, Phil Johnston, who is the writer, director, producer, and even one of the voice talents in the movie, said: “I still can’t quite believe that I spent the last few years collaborating with David Byrne, a musical hero of mine since I was 13. From the first demo he sent me, on which the featured instrument was a 100-year-old banjolele, I knew I was going to love the songs he wrote. Throughout the process, my collaboration with David has been incredibly fun and surprisingly easy, probably because I’ve been stealing from him for so long. When David and I started talking about an end credit song, the first potential collaborator David brought up was Hayley Williams. The first word I said was ‘yes.’ Followed by ‘please.’ I still can’t quite believe that two of my favorite songwriters wrote a song together for The Twits. The saying, ‘never meet your heroes’ simply does not apply here. I met two of them, and boy howdy, it’s been a dream come true.”
In addition to the release date and news regarding the soundtrack, we got two additional new photo stills of the lead characters Beesha (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and Bubsy (Ryan Lopez) with additional cast members listed below:
