In the Mud Review
Netflix’s In the Mud is a story of survival within a women’s prison, where allegiances mean little and one must always be on high alert. The themes in the series, surrounding sisterhood and crime, are nothing new for the average audience who might have seen similar, if not the same, stories told in different shows. The series starts off with 8 women who get into an accident on their way to prison, and how that shapes their experiences once inside.
Interestingly enough, that almost has no bearing on the plot moving forward, although it is the most interesting part of the show. That’s a bummer, because I was of the opinion that it would have a bigger bearing on the women’s lives in prison, but alas. The show brings forth the corruption and unhealthy situations that happen inside the walls of the women’s prison, where money and power are everything, and, other than not being able to go wherever they want, the inmates are able to do everything that one can imagine.

Switching the perspective from El marginal‘s testosterone-driven men to women offers a fresh perspective, especially to fans of the show. Although you might think that turning the tables and showing us women’s prisons will make things different… it really doesn’t. In fact, I think the series runs on similar themes and intensities, which are made maybe a little crazier because of the sexual exploitation aspect, which happens a lot in the show. There’s a lot of nudity and sex shown here that might leave some viewers disturbed, and it can be a bit much. I guess it’s realistic, but it can feel unnecessary at times.
I think the series also does a good job of showcasing the women as more than just prisoners. The principal cast all have good backstories and character arcs that make you want to keep watching. The series holds on to its thrill for a big part of the runtime, and every minute you question what else is about to rain down on these women. It’s easy to root for all of them because, despite their flaws, they feel likeable people who are not used to prison life.
Final Thoughts

Is In the Mud the best story out there? It’s definitely engaging and crazy enough to keep you invested to learn what happens to the incarcerated women. The power dynamics and thrilling situations turn this into something more than just another prison story, but, in the end, the series isn’t anything new, and you feel that in every moment of the runtime.
