Netflix will become the streaming home of the 2024 romantic drama On Swift Horses, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing), Will Poulter (Warfare, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch), and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn), beginning in August 2025 in the United States. The movie arrives on the platform a few months after its theatrical and digital rollouts, following Sony Pictures Classics’ release.
Set in the 1950s American West, the film follows newlyweds Muriel (Edgar-Jones) and Lee (Will Poulter) as their fresh start is upended by the return of Lee’s charismatic brother, Julius (Elordi). Drawn into the world of horse racing and high-stakes gambling, Muriel and Julius each embark on journeys of desire, self-discovery, and risk.
Diego Calva and Sasha Calle round out the principal cast. The movie is adapted from Shannon Pufahl’s acclaimed novel and directed by Daniel Minahan.
On Swift Horses will stream on Netflix for 18 months in the pay-one window in line with Sony Pictures’ output, beginning August 23rd, 2025. It’s the second Sony movie for the month with Broke, starring Dennis Quaid, also set for an August 2025 premiere. This release date currently only applies to Netflix in the US – other regions will stream the movie in the coming years.
The film received a mix of critical acclaim upon its initial release, currently holding a 50% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes albeit audiences did seem to lean into it more heavily with a 73%. Peter Rainer for FilmWeek (LAist) said, “A repressed movie about repression. The characters all have a certain emotional distance from each other, and I felt that the filmmaker had an emotional distance from the characters themselves.” RogerEbert was far more kind, saying, “stumbles a little bit on its way around what feels like an extremely rushed final lap, but this is still a winner.”
The trio of main actors will all be seen in upcoming Netflix projects. Daisy Edgar-Jones is attached to star in Here Comes The Flood, which begins production soon, while Jacob Elordi will be appearing in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein movie this November. Will Poulter recently appeared in season 7 of Black Mirror, and our understanding is that he’s also attached to a new Netflix comedy series.
